RIP: Owsley “Bear” Stanley Dead At 76

Longtime Grateful Dead associate Owsley “Bear” Stanley died in a car crash near his home in Australia earlier this week. His exact age is unknown; however, he was believed to have been 76.

Bear held many roles in the Grateful Dead association over the years including manager, financier, sound designer, and recording engineer. He engineered the group’s legendary Wall Of Sound set up as well as helped co-create their signature Steal Your Face logo with Bob Thomas.

Stanley was also known for his pure strain of LSD and was a chief supplier of Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters, and members of the Bay Area music community in the 60’s and 70’s.

Bear’s legacy will live on through the Steal Your Face logo he created years ago that has now become one of the most iconic symbols in music.
