Have You Heard: The McLovins

It is not easy to successfully break into the jam band scene. Usually years of touring and a strong following are required to become jam favorites. The McLovins however managed to make quite a name for themselves in only two years, and the most impressive part is their age.

The McLovins are drummer/singer Jake Huffman, 17, bassist Jason Ott, 16, and guitarist Jeff Howard, 15, and holy hell can these guys play. After meeting at a jazz camp in 2008 the trio began jamming together and haven’t looked back since.

Originally playing flawless covers of legendary acts such as the Grateful Dead, Phish, and the Meters, the group hit the big time when their Phish cover of  “You Enjoy Myself” was posted on the Phantasy Tour message board with an overwhelmingly positive response.

Following the warm reception from hardcore Phish-heads, the band recorded and released their first album of original material last summer entitled Conundrum. The 9 track album mixes funky grooves, jazzy rhythms, and face melting solos that are impressive for artists of any age.

Their success has given them the opportunity to extensively tour the Northeast as well as play large established music festival such as Gathering of the Vibes ’09 and Snoe.Down ’10.

This summer will see the release of their second album as well as an appearance at Warren Haynes’ Mountain Jam Festival in upstate NY. I highly recommend catching up with them on an upcoming tour date, though don’t worry too much if you miss them; with their chemistry and musical ability they have the potential to be around for the next 50+ years. Seriously.
